FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA
Fujifilm’s First Cinema Camera boasts a 102MP High Speed Large Format Sensor
Fujifilm is diving into the cinema camera market. Finally, the anticipation is over. Fujifilm has announced the development of its first dedicated cinema camera, named the GFX ETERNA, with a planned release in 2025. Hold on to your pants, people.
Fujifilm describes its new project as part of a mission to lead a new era of video creation by crafting enduring masterpieces. The GFX ETERNA aims to blend Fujifilm's deep expertise in video technology with the well-regarded capabilities of the GFX series cameras, creating a product specifically designed for high-end video production. This offering promises exceptional video quality through a large-format sensor, robust data handling, and extensive post-production flexibility.
The GFX ETERNA is set to utilize the same 102-megapixel CMOS II HS large-format sensor found in the GFX100 II Medium Format Mirrorless Camera. Coupled with Fujifilm’s 5th-generation X-Processor 5, this camera will deliver high-speed processing and fast data readouts. The large-format sensor is expected to offer cinematic video with rich details and stunning depth.
Fujifilm’s first cinema-focused device adopts a box-style design, reminiscent of models like Sony's FX6. Key connectivity options include HDMI, SDI, Genlock, Ethernet, USB-C, a 2-PIN LEMO DC Out, and a V-lock battery mount. The status and menu display appear to be positioned on the non-operator side, though a second screen may be available. While built-in ND filters haven’t been confirmed, the camera’s form factor hints at the potential for a variable electronic ND system. Recording media might include CFexpress Type B cards, and it is anticipated that autofocus capabilities from the GFX100 II will carry over.
With the rising demand for content across various platforms, including short films, documentaries, and full-length features, Fujifilm plans to field-test the GFX ETERNA extensively. The company aims to enhance the GFX System's lineup to support high-quality and efficient video production, meeting the needs of diverse creators.
For those curious about accessories, Fujifilm is also developing a compatible power zoom lens with a 32-90mm equivalent focal length and a GL-PL mount adapter for using PL mount lenses, offering versatility in cinematic production.
Attendees at InterBEE 2024, from November 13-15, will get a first-hand look at a prototype of the GFX ETERNA. Fujifilm has a rich legacy in motion picture technology, dating back to the development of Japan’s first positive film in 1934. With innovations like the ETERNA film series and GFX cameras, the brand has consistently supported cinematic advancements. The introduction of a dedicated cinema camera reflects their ongoing commitment to meeting industry demands with cutting-edge solutions.
Pricing remains unannounced, but given the $7,499 USD price tag of the GFX100 II, expectations are high for a premium offering. Whether Fujifilm plans to diversify its cinema lineup further, or maintain a unique niche, remains to be seen. As always, new industry entries generate excitement and fuel creativity in the community. For those who’ve awaited this milestone, Fujifilm’s move is a welcome one.
