UPMC with the Pittsburgh Steelers
Ryan Shazier's 50 Phenoms
Four-time Emmy-winning documentary series for UPMC and the Pittsburgh Steelers. We directed, shot and edited it across three seasons, 2021 to 2024, for GH Advertising.
The project
Ryan Shazier’s 50 Phenoms is a documentary video series UPMC made in partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers. GH Advertising brought us in, and over three seasons, from 2021 to 2024, we made between 10 and 20 episodes. They ran on UPMC’s website, its social channels and YouTube.
What we did
We handled the whole production. That meant directing and producing, running camera, lights and audio on location, then editing, color grading, the sound mix and the graphics.
Why it works
A healthcare brand can tell people it cares, or it can sit back and let someone tell their own story for five minutes. We built every episode around one person and gave them room to talk. That kind of documentary storytelling builds trust in a way a 30-second ad can’t, and it gives a hospital system and a sports team something people actually choose to watch and share.
The series won us four Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards: PJ for cinematography, credited as director of photography, and Chelsea for motion design, in both 2023 and 2024.

Need a documentary video like this?
Commercials, brand films and the stuff companies actually need. We plan it, light it, shoot it and cut it. Two people who have done this for fifteen years, plus a crew we trust when the job gets bigger.
